Have you ever wondered how hand-painted sign artists like Alex Kurakake of Smart Alex Signs Orange County create that elegant gold leaf lettering you often see on our client's classic reverse-painted glass signs, pubs, restaurants and tattoo shops? One of these techniques is called Water Gilding. Glass gilding requires plenty of patience and precision, and gold leaf is a very delicate material.
Gold leaf is made from thin sheets of real gold and is available in various carats. While imitation gold leaf is available, this doesn’t have the unique luster of genuine gold as it is harder to apply and doesn’t stick as well. Gold leaf usually comes in booklets of 25 sheets with each leaf separated by paper tissue.

WHAT IS WATER GILDING?
Water gilding is a technique you can use to apply gold and silver leaf sheets to various surfaces, including wood, glass, metal, and wood. Water gilding on glass and other surfaces will allow you to transform the appearance of the signage and making it look as if you crafted it from pure gold.

There are many techniques that can be used to create the right effect with gold leaf. The process of applying it is called ‘gold leafing’ or, to some, ‘gilding’. Gold leaf itself is very thinly hammered sheets. It’s usually applied to the surface for lettering or sign design with soft brushes and gentle layering skills, adhering it to the chosen surface to create the desired finished burnished effect.
There are many traditional methods that have been used for hundreds of years. One of the oldest and hardest is water gilding, a method which has gone virtually unchanged and is still done by hand to this day. At Smart Alex Signs, we offer Water Gilding Class Workshops to all aspirant sig artists in Orange County to enhance their skills using gold leaf on glass.
