THE STORY BEHIND THE ICONIC LOGO OF REDONDO LANDING
Selbert Perkins Design is a team of diverse creative individuals with backgrounds in landscape architecture, branding, and many more. They strive to create great experiences that people remember and enjoy. SPD created the vintage inspired logo and brand communications plan for the historic 1898 building and pier at Redondo Landing. The varied visual elements tell stories of the pier’s history and reflect the vibrant waterfront environment.
Client Redondo Landing on the Pier called Smart Alex Signs and spoke with Huntington Beach's Sign Artist Alex Kurakake for help regarding their exterior dock signage. The Client explained that they need a fresh-looking signage as their current one is starting to fade and were eager to benefit Alex Kurakake's brilliant expertise and creativity on the mix.
Smart Alex Hand-Painted Signs, along with fellow sign artists @betty_good_signs and @teddystiki, they immediately went to Redondo Landing in Redondo Beach and started working on the project.
Before Photoshop and Illustrator became standard, artists climbed onto ladders to hand paint wall murals, buildings, infrastructures, and many more. Different fonts conveyed different emotions and hand-painted signs visually communicated what people could expect from that product, service or establishment just as digital display ads do today. Restaurants depicted folk lettering, conveying a home-style feel. Carnivals and circuses used bold fonts and bright colors to create whimsical signage indicative of quirky performance art.
Many early sign painters learned the trade through apprenticeships or were self-taught. Though the practice was out of necessity, it was also an outlet for artists to share their talents and passions. Just like Orange County's Sign Artist Alex Kurakake, he has done numerous sign painting workshops for hand-painted sign aspirants in Southern California.
At Smart Alex Signs, we realize the value of this traditional method and specialize in creating custom exterior dock & pier hand-painted signs that communicate your brand's message effectively towards customers and guests alike.
Our core principle at Smart Alex Hand-Painted Signs is a fusion of traditional artistry with modern techniques. This philosophy has made us a trustworthy name in Orange County, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and other surrounding nearby cities in Southern California.
ABOUT THE CLIENT
Redondo Landing on the Pier - Redondo Beach, Orange County
Originally built in 1888 to handle the enormous lumber trade from the Pacific Northwest, Redondo’s Wharf 1 was the first of Redondo’s era of piers, wharfs, and harbors. The current seventh generation horseshoe-shaped pier stands 25 feet above the water, spans 70,000 square-feet of open space. and is known as the largest “endless” pier on the California coast.
It is also connected to a remnant of the wooden Monstad Pier (Wharf 3) that was built in the 1920s. Today, the Redondo Landing serves as the gateway building to The Pier, Its façade is reminiscent of the Looff Hippodrome, a carousel building that was built on The Pier in the 1920s.
Redondo Beach Pier continues to host visitors from around the world and generations of local families who have grown up with regular visits to the Redondo Beach Municipal Pier.
GEORGE FREETH
Introduced Surfing to California
George Freeth was born in Honolulu on November 8, 1883 and revived the lost Polynesian art of surfing. Henry E. Huntington invited Freeth to Redondo Beach in 1907 as an attraction to promote “the largest saltwater plunge in the world” that he was building.
Thousands came to Redondo Beach to see “The Man Who Can Walk on Water” mount his 8-foot long, solid wood, 200 pound surf board and ride a wave onto Redondo Beach while standing upright. Freeth also performed daring stunts in The Plunge/Bath House diving pool tower. Freeth founded the life guard association and invented the torpedo shaped rescue buoy.
